About the Disciples of Christ

Who are Disciples of Christ?

The Disciples of Christ are a Protestant Christian denomination that arose in this country, beginning a little more than two hundred years ago. Reverend Barton Stone, Thomas Campbell, and Alexander Campbell swam against the historical current by propounding not more denominations, but Christian union; rather than hierarchical church governance, independence of congregations; rather than creeds, no creed but Christ; rather than a welter of restrictions and calendars governing participation in the Lord's Supper, open, weekly Communion.

By 1830 the character of the movement was clear, and it was equally clear that the existing denominations had no place for it. This was a moment of great irony, as an ecumenical and inclusive movement was cast out of existing denominations for being ecumenical and inclusive. The result was one more denomination, rather than many fewer.

We retain the character of those early days when principles were formulated, as well as the successive overlays and refinements of historical and intellectual development. First Christian Church of Oklahoma City has from the city's earliest days been a vital presence and we hope that you will find us, as a congregation, and the Disciples of Christ as a whole to be exciting and nurturing.

Communion

As Disciples we practice "open communion"!  The Lord's Supper, or communion is celebrated in weekly worship & is the Center of our worship.  It is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ.

The Breadmakers bake bread for communion, as well as to be delivered to first time visitors.

Baptism by immersion

In Baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God begins.  Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored.
